A Dedicated Space for the Reports and Posters that Document the Activities of the Leupp Kiln Conference

The Leupp Kiln Conference, which began in Old Leupp Arizona in 2003 (thence the name), is an informal gathering of archaeologists, potters and other interested folks with an interest in ancient and modern ceramic technology in the Southwest.  The primary sponsor of the event is the Institute for Archaeological Ceramic Research (IACR). http://www.instituteforceramicarchaeology.org

The highlights of the annual event are an Ancestral Pueblo Black-on-white firing supplemented with smaller firings utilizing various techniques and the collection of clays from local sources.  In this way we combine two of the most interesting activities imaginable - firing pots and collecting clay to make more pots to be fired!  We fire in the old way or what some of you may know as a primitive firing or pit firing. These are misnomers since how can you call it primitive if we modern people have trouble reproducing it and not all the firings require a pit?  Other than a basic concern with safety, (we do create small to enormous bonfires), there are few rules other than to have as much fun as possible and to learn from each other's mistakes and sucesses.  Indeed, getting to see old friends and make new ones at least once a year is one of the more important benefits of our conference.

Each year someone in our group volunteers to host the conference, which means that they get to work out all of the details while we get to travel to exotic locations and collect clays from sources most of us would never have a chance to find on our own.
